Ground squirrels are mammals found in southern Africa.

The ground squirrel grows to 20-30 centimeters (8-12 inches) long. It has large claws that let it burrow in hard, dry, stony soil. It has brownish-pink fur on top. Its belly, muzzle, and feet are white, and it has a white stripe on its sides. The squirrel’s bushy tail is marked with black bands.

The ground squirrel’s diet ranges from seeds, roots, and bulbs to bird’s eggs and insects.
