When performing keyhole surgery on a knee, a surgeon inserts a small metal tube into the patient’s knee and passes fluid into the area to expand it. Next, a tiny telescope and a miniature video camera are inserted through tubes to project images from inside the knee onto a television screen. The surgeon performs the operation using special surgical instruments inserted through separate holes, while watching his actions on the monitor screen.
