Laser eye surgery permanently changes the shape of a person’s cornea – the transparent front covering of the eye – to improve the eye’s focus. During laser eye surgery, a thin, outer layer of the cornea is treated with alcohol to lift it away from the eye. Then laser rays are beamed at the cornea underneath to reshape it. Once the outer layers are placed back over the cornea, it is able to refract, or focus, light into the eye correctly again.
