Resplendent quetzals are birds found in Mexico and Central America.

The resplendent quetzal is named for the brilliant colors of the male. Most of his body is vivid green, while his breast is a rich crimson. The male has a long train of tail feathers. These feathers can grow as long as 61 centimeters (24 inches). He will flutter these feathers in front of a female quetzal to impress her. In cycles, the tail feathers fall out and then grow back again.

The ancient Maya and Aztec people of Central America and Mexico believed that the quetzal was a special bird that should be protected.
